Impeccable With Your Word |
Don Miguel Ruiz, the author of, “The Four Agreements” came to mind recently as I was sifting through the blizzard of news, faux news and almost news that comes our way on a regular basis.
For those who aren’t familiar with The Four Agreements they are essentially Don Miguel Ruiz’s take on Toltec philosophy.
The Agreements are;
- Be Impeccable With Your Word
- Don’t Take Anything Personally
- Don’t Make Assumptions
- Always Do your Best
Recently there have been so many incidences of people playing with their words. I don’t mean using plays on words, which I thoroughly enjoy, but rather trying to use words to not say anything or to mislead or misrepresent.
I think too often we are expected to come up with a “quotable quote” or focus on our “single, overriding communication objective, (SOCO), rather than just being impeccable with our word.
Other, perhaps more familiar, ways of saying being impeccable with your word are, keeping your word, saying what you mean and meaning what you say and of course being honest.
As a parent and a leader, I take being impeccable with my word pretty seriously and am disappointed when others don’t take the same care.
While I’m fond and appreciative of Ruiz’s writings I’m not suggesting you drop everything and read his books.
However, it wouldn’t hurt if we were all more impeccable with our words.
It’s much less embarrassing than the alternative.
