What Would You Say About Your Company if You Knew You Were Going to Die |
Now that I have your attention, this title came to me while I was reading reviews and bits and pieces of Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson.
In the course of the book Mr. Jobs says things about colleagues, competitors and acquaintances that might've been difficult to say were he still alive and subject to the repercussions of such comments and observations.
It got me thinking about what I might say if I found myself in a similar unfortunate situation.
It also got me thinking about what people who work day after day with the same people in the same company might like to say were there no repercussions to their comments and observations.
Most of us recall movies, songs and articles that revolved around the theme of, "Take this job and shove it".
In today's economy that really is an artifact of the, "the good old days".
Today most of us are fortunate if we have a job.
That doesn't mean, however, that our jobs couldn't be better, more fulfilling and rewarding beyond the paycheck.
Which brings me to the title of this blog.
Too often we focus on what we would say to our boss or coworker if we could only get away with it.
Too often the focus seems to be on telling someone off rather than challenging someone to make things better.
Taking the time to understand why this or that happened or why the company does things this way or that way rather than dismissing it as misguided or stupid might be initially more risky but probably more useful and productive in the long run.
So the next time somebody has an issue with another employee, their job or their company I'd like them to say, "Let’s take this job/company and make it better".
After all, isn’t it more rewarding to be around to see the fruits of your energy, concern and action?
