The Registry and Surveillance System in Hemoglobinopathies (RuSH) project is sponsored by the NHLBI and CDC, a collaborative agreement including six states. Our goal is to improve care and quality of life for Californians with hemoglobinopathies (including sickle cell disease and thalassemias as well as other rare disorders) by determining how many people in the state have these conditions and what the impacts are to them. We will use administrative data to help establish the prevalence of the disorders and complications within the state, and then work with community based organizations and health care provider groups to establish a registry for interested patients, as well to provide education and referrals to services through the outreach component of the project.
